Welcome to MK Quakers
You and your family are warmly invited to a Quaker Meeting for Worship
What happens during a Meeting for Worship?
We sit in a comfortable silence and quieten our minds. It’s ok to cough, sneeze and itch, and shuffle in your seat, or even leave the room if you need to. In this quiet, we may seek to look for a deeper place within ourselves, to find a place where we can open our hearts and lives to new insights, and guidance from God, the Light, or whatever is meaningful to each of us. This time may be used simply to reflect on our week, family, and others, or perhaps to reflect on gratitude, or just be present. You will find religious texts on the central table that you can pick up and refer to if you wish.
During the meeting a Friend may be moved to speak briefly. This is done in a spirit of seeking and questioning. We call this “spoken ministry”. Anyone present is allowed to speak, though it’s usually offered by the same person only once during the meeting.
We try to preserve the silence during the opening and closing five minutes.
When an elder shakes their neighbour’s hand we know that the Meeting has come to a close, and you may greet your neighbours with a handshake.
What do I do if I want to come?
Please either just come along, perhaps a few minutes before the Meeting is due to start, or contact us if you would like a chat first.
Once at the Meeting House, a greeter at the door will welcome you and help you with any questions you may have. You may be introduced to one or two Friends, time allowing. If you are bringing any children, you/they will be asked if they would like to join in with a children’s activity.
Please take any seat in the main Meeting Room and make yourself comfortable. As soon as the first person has entered the room, we try to maintain a silence for settling in.
After the Meeting
At the end of the meeting the weekly Notices are read out, after which Friends and visitors are free to stay for conversation and refreshments in the Garden Room.
Join us at an Enquirers Session
Last Sunday of the month 12:00 to 13:00 at the Quaker Centre
Open to visitors, newcomers, and established Quakers alike. Enquirers is a relaxed space for exploring what it means to be a Quaker. Sessions are guided by questions from those attending on the day.
If you’ve attended the Meeting for Worship earlier, there’s time to enjoy refreshments before the Enquirers session starts.
Contact us if you would welcome a chat before you come.
